On at least 18 separate occasions, vertebrates have abandoned their stomachs. (It’s commonly said that pufferfish puff by expanding their stomachs, but while they have a sac in the right place, it’s not a glandular, acid-secreting one, so it doesn’t really count.) Of the almost 30,000 species, it seems that around a quarter have abandoned their stomachs, including groups like wrasse, carp, cowfish, pufferfish, zebrafish and more. The platypus doesn’t have one, nor do its closest relatives, the spiny echidnas. It allowed our ancestors to digest bigger proteins, since acidic environments deform these large molecules and boost the actions of enzymes that break them apart.īut over the last 200 years, scientists have shown that many vertebrates have lost their stomachs. The stomach, defined as an acid-producing part of the gut, first evolved around 450 million years ago, and it’s unique to back-boned animals (vertebrates). In other words, the platypus has no stomach. There’s no sac in the middle that secrete powerful acids and digestive enzymes. And if you look inside a platypus, you’ll find another weird feature: its gullet connects directly to its intestines. The males have a venomous claw on their hind feet, and the females lay eggs. It has a leathery duck-like bill, a flattened tail and webbed feet. The platypus is an anthology of weirdness. The housing charity Shelter England says almost 2.5 million renters are either behind with or constantly struggling to pay their rent – an increase of 45% since April 2022.ĭata indicates average private rents in Britain have soared to record highs. More people are struggling to pay the rent. The property website Zoopla said this week: “The most likely outcome for 2023 is … a modest decline in house prices of up to 5%.” While some commentators have predicted property values may fall by 20%, others don’t agree. But finding a buyer at the price you need may be difficult if some of the forecasts for what could happen to house prices prove correct. This would give you a lump sum of money which you could use to pay off your mortgage,” Citizens Advice says. “If you can’t find any other way of clearing your mortgage debts, you might want to think about selling your property. Ultimately, the best course of action for some people may be to think about selling their home. “Lenders see repossession as a last resort, and the courts are very reluctant to grant a repossession order if the borrower has made an effort to pay,” Boulger says. The rules say that your lender must consider any reasonable request from you to change when or how you pay your mortgage. Write to them, saying why you are struggling to pay and what you can afford each month. It is much wiser to contact your lender first. If you get to the end of the month and let the direct debit bounce, then about two weeks later you are likely to get a letter or call from your mortgage lender. “You can ask your lender for a temporary interest-only period, which will significantly reduce your payments,” says Boulger, who advises borrowers to negotiate for as long a period on interest-only as the bank will grant.Ī £200,000 mortgage on a 6% interest rate and with a 25-year term drops from £1,289 a month to £1,000 if the borrower switches fully from repayment to interest-only. More than 6m existing UK mortgages are fixed, so for the time being these people are insulated from this latest interest rate rise. On a £250,000 home loan (repayment, 25-year term), a 2.25% rate would mean a monthly cost of £1,090, while on a 6.46% rate it would be £1,681. On Thursday this week the average new two-year fix was 6.46%. About a year ago the average new two-year fixed rate was priced at 2.25%, but in recent weeks typical new rates have leapt above 6%. On our papyrus, we see a green called malachite, a mineral pigment composed of copper carbonate. The presence of Egyptian blue in our vignettes is indicated by recent analysis with x-ray fluorescence (see future blog post for more information on analysis). It was often thickly applied and coarsely ground, visible under magnification, due to the fact that it appears paler the more it is ground. This crystalline material is then ground into a pigment and is often referred to as blue “frit”. In addition to naturally-occurring pigments, the ancient Egyptians are credited with making the first artificially made pigment, Egyptian Blue.ĭetail and photomicrograph of Egyptian blue pigment, 2.7X magnificationĮgyptian blue is a glass-like pigment which was made by heating together quartz sand, copper, calcium oxide, and an alkali such as natron, which was found naturally in the waters of Egypt. It is interesting to see that the vignettes are often painted in one color within an outlined area, rather than layered to create highlights or shading. The basic palette used to paint the vignettes, or illustrations, comprised a range of pigments either mined from the earth or extracted from minerals, including blue, green, black, white, red and yellow. These brushes looked somewhat like brushes today and allowed the scribe to vary the thickness of the line. The ancient Egyptians used reed brushes to write the text. In our Book of the Dead pictured above, they denote the beginning of spells. The red was often used for rubrics such as titles and headings to distinguish them from the rest of the text. Like most pigments used in ancient Egypt it is made from a naturally-occurring mineral, rather than an organic material derived from living sources such as plants. This ink is very stable, does not fade, and does not deteriorate the papyrus below as some metallic inks can do.Īnother predominant color seen on the papyrus is red, derived from the earth pigment iron oxide. As well as keeping the carbon particles suspended in the water solution, the gum binder helps to keep the ink adhered to the papyrus surface. As a valuable source of timber in Egypt, its branches may have also been used as the source for the charcoal. To keep the particles from clumping together, the black is mixed with a binder, probably a plant gum from the Acacia tree family. The ink is made by burning organic materials such as wood or oil, and then pulverizing the material before mixing it with water. Brooklyn Museum, Charles Edwin Wilbour Fund, 37.1777E. "We were able to very easily extract 0.5 percent of REEs in this preliminary study using a basic ion exchange method in the lab," said Pisupati. Extracting 2 percent of the available REEs would provide an economic boon to companies, the team said. The team reported in their findings, published in the current issue of Metallurgical and Materials Transactions E, that ammonium sulfate was both environmentally friendly and able to extract the highest amount of REEs. "We experimented with many solvents to find one that is both inexpensive and environmentally friendly." "Essentially, REEs are sticking to the surface of molecules found in coal, and we use a special solution to pluck them out," said Pisupati. Ion exchange involves rinsing the coal with a solution that releases the REEs that are bound to the coal. In contrast, ion exchange is more environmentally friendly and requires less energy. For example, past research has examined "roasting," a process that is energy intensive and requires exposure to concentrated acids. Using byproducts of coal production from the Northern Appalachian region of the U.S., the team investigated whether a chemical process called ion exchange could extract REEs in a safer manner than other extraction methods. We wanted to take a fresh look at the feasibility of extracting REEs from coal because it is so abundant in the U.S." Today, we rely on rare-earth elements for the production of many necessary and also luxury items, including computers, smart phones, rechargeable batteries, electric vehicles, magnets and chemical catalysts. The iPad is famous for long battery life. So if you're like a lot of people who read in bed before sleep, reading on a Kindle will probably help you sleep better.ĥ. But the Kindle screen is passive, meaning that it merely reflects light. The iPad has a very bright screen ( Apple wisely built a screen dimmer slider bar right into the iBook interface). God's Last Wish may also be referring to Philipp Mainländer 's "Philosophy Of Redemption", where he writes about God deciding (or knowing) that nonexistence and death is inherently better than existence and life, and decided to kill himself. This interpretation isn't worthy of the last but one theory of the entire iceberg! Instead, i think is better to assume that "God's Last Wish" refers to an even more dark theory. I strongly suggest Dad not to interpret this theory with the Egg's story: basically God was dying and created us just before his death, to become one day more similiar to Him and ascend.
